NICEIC. The sign of a serious professional

NICEIC electrical certification – your questions answered

NICEIC is a certification body that provides your business with recognition that it meets the highest standards in the electrical industry. To be certified by NICEIC, you must be able to demonstrate your competence and commitment to quality and compliant workmanship.
Complete our online enquiry form and a member of our experienced team will be in contact to assist you through the process. The application process involves submitting your details and providing evidence of your relevant qualifications and experience.

In addition to having the appropriate qualifications you also need to meet the appropriate level of experience for the scheme. For our electrical schemes this is a minimum of two years' supervisory experience in the electrical industry and you must be able to demonstrate your knowledge and expertise in the field.

You will also need to provide evidence of your insurance.

Does the business have a minimum of £2 million Public Liability Insurance and where appropriate Professional Indemnity Insurance/Employers liability insurance?

Insurance must be appropriate to the risk, nature, scope and scale of work undertaken. Apply for NICEIC certification.

You can view our list of accepted qualifications on our scheme pages, which vary for different schemes. These qualifications include a Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation or equivalent and an 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification.
To join NICEIC, you must be able to demonstrate your competence and commitment to quality workmanship. You must also provide evidence of your experience and qualifications, such as City & Guilds or NVQ certificates, and have appropriate insurance cover. In addition to this, you will need to pass an on-site assessment with one of our approved assessors. Once you have been accepted into the scheme, you will be able to access a range of benefits including technical support and access to our highly acclaimed webinars. Apply for NICEIC certification.

The cost of joining NICEIC depends on the type of work your business undertakes, its needs and assessment requirements. Contractors pay an annual registration fee. Once you complete our online enquiry form, our team will be in touch to confirm the costs.

Scheme fees are also available in the Key Documents section of your chosen scheme.

It is not a legal requirement to join a certifying body such as NICEIC to work as an electrician. But it’s worth knowing that some customers such as facilities businesses, landlords and housing associations do require professionals to be NICEIC-certified. Our badge gives customers confidence in the quality of the electrical work carried out. It also gives you access to the benefits and technical support services we offer.
Becoming certified with NICEIC is a great way to get recognition for your business. It can be as quick as 7 - 8 weeks if you meet all of the requirements and meet our assessment criteria.
You will need to renew your certification every 12 months. Don’t worry, we'll send you an email eight weeks before your assessment is due, asking you to get in touch with our scheduling team. Read more about your assessment.

Assessment requirements depend on the work you undertake. All assessments require your business to show relevant paperwork such as:

  • appropriate insurance

  • complaints procedure

  • qualifications

  • training records for employees

  • access to completed works relevant to certification to demonstrate competence.

Choosing which certifier to go with is a personal preference. NICEIC is the most established and most popular in the UK with trade professionals. Our badge is familiar with householders and many commercial specifiers or local authorities are required to use NICEIC-certified businesses.
There is no legal requirement that electricians are certified by a body such as NICEIC. However, being registered with us is seen as an endorsement of your professional standards and gives you access to a wide range of benefits
