CPD with NICEIC - your questions answered

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the process of developing and maintaining competence; a set of recognised skills needed to reliably perform your job.
CPD is the key to developing you and your professional career. It helps you stay up to date with current requirements, industry regulations, green and emerging technologies, and other new developments. It can also help you improve your skills and progress into new roles, and generally support your development throughout your career.

CPD will help you:
  • Keep up to date with industry changes
  • Keep pace with changing technology
  • Develop new skills and help to retain existing skills
  • Provide evidence of competence when it’s required.
Any activity from which you learn or develop professionally can be considered eligible for CPD, though you should ensure these complement your role and enhance your knowledge and skills. CPD can include a wide range of activities, such as:
  • Work-based learning – for example, reflecting on experiences at work, or considering feedback from colleagues or customers.
  • Professional activity – for example, being involved in a professional body like NICEIC, attending an industry event, or giving a presentation for work colleagues.
  • Formal education – for example, going on formal course.
  • Self-directed learning – for example, reading articles or books (including reading Connections magazine or watching NICEIC technical seminars and webinars), or carrying out research when installing a new product or equipment.
Yes, businesses certified on NICEIC’s electrotechnical schemes (including the Approved Contractor and Domestic Installer Schemes) must show written evidence that CPD is being undertaken by all employed persons engaged in electrotechnical work.
Recording your CPD can be as simple as writing it down in a spreadsheet. Make sure you include details such as:
  • What you did
  • When and for how long you did it
  • What you learned
  • Any follow-up activities that may be needed to fully benefit from the activity
  • Any other comments you feel may be relevant.
Our editable CPD record sheet contains helpful prompts to ensure you write down all the information you need.
We do not prescribe a set number of hours of CPD that must be undertaken to maintain certification. What matters is that all employed persons (including sub-contractors) are doing CPD, that they are recording it, and that the Qualified Supervisor is able to produce evidence of this on assessment.
Our editable CPD record sheet can be used to help you get down all the important details of your CPD activities and have them ready to present at assessment.
You may have seen the term ‘CPD-accredited’ in communications about our various CPD events and activities. It means the CPD has been validated by an independent external body and deemed to meet the highest possible training standards. All of NICEIC’s CPD-accredited training sessions, webinars and events have been validated by the CPD Certification Service.
