SkillELECTRIC winner Charlie Moore on his apprenticeship and career progression
The start of the apprenticeship
21-year-old, Charlie Moore, completed his apprenticeship in August 2023 through the College of West Anglia and his employer, Bramham Electrical Ltd, based in King’s Lynn, Norfolk.
Charlie began his apprenticeship after finishing school and was placed with NICEIC-certified electrical installation and maintenance company, Bramham Electrical Ltd. When asked why he started the apprenticeship, Charlie said: “At the point of applying for my apprenticeship I knew I didn’t want to exclusively study in a classroom, I wanted to do something which was more hands-on and practical. I felt an apprenticeship would be my best option.
“I chose an electrical apprenticeship as I already had an interest in the sector as I had been studying engineering once a week for three years while I was at college.”
“I think the balance of doing one day at college and then four days on site really suited me and helped put me in the right mindset for being part of the workforce. I like that no day is the same and you are always doing something different, working in both domestic and commercial environments. Plus, the fact I was also earning while being on the programme was a real benefit.”
SkillELECTRIC 2024
Now a fully qualified electrical contractor at NICEIC-certified business, Bramham Electricals Ltd, Charlie is an integral part of the team. Recently, Charlie was crowned winner of the SkillELECTRIC 2024 competition, which showcases the best electrical student and apprentice talent in the country, by putting them through a rigorous set of practical challenges.
Speaking on the win, Charlie said: “I am so proud to have won SkillELECTRIC. It’s been a fantastic journey and has allowed me to learn new things every day. This competition has given me a boost in confidence in my abilities and the potential I have to develop in this industry. I’m looking forward to progressing my career within the electrical field.”
Next steps
With a desire to keep learning new skills, Charlie is looking to complete the Level 3 Award in the Requirements for the Installation of Electric Vehicle Charging Points. The qualification covers the underpinning technical requirements for the installation of electric vehicle charging points (EVCP).
Charlie’s advice
When asked what advice he would give to school leavers who are thinking about taking on an apprenticeship, he said: “If you’re interested in an apprenticeship, I would absolutely recommend it. You need to be prepared for hard work, but you can grow skills quickly and progress if you’re willing to put the effort in.”
“An apprenticeship provides a great balance, with the education you receive in the classroom as well as the four days a week on-site where you learn on the tools. A real benefit is that you are being paid while you learn and that you are learning skills for life.”
