NICEIC, the UK’s largest certification body for the building services industry, congratulates Danny McBean for winning first place at this year’s SkillELECTRIC.

The annual event, which aims to showcase the UK’s best electrical students and apprentices is part of the WorldSkills UK competition framework.

Competing against the UK’s best electrical students and apprentices, finalists took part in a challenging Solar Photovoltaic (PV) task, developed by NICEIC.
NICEIC, the UK’s largest certification provider for the building services industry, congratulates Grants (Dufftown) LTD employee, Danny McBean, for winning first place at this year’s SkillELECTRIC. The annual event, which aims to showcase the UK’s best electrical students and apprentices is part of the WorldSkills UK competition framework.
In a first for this year, finalists took part in a challenging Solar PV task, developed by NICEIC. The task involved the isolation of multiple sources of supply, wiring and termination of direct current (DC) cabling, and calculations using measured values.
NICEIC’s Technical Director, Paul Collins, said: “Danny is a deserving winner of SkillELECTRIC 2023. He demonstrated outstanding competence, accuracy, and creativity in his work. We are immensely proud of our involvement in this event, which aims to raise the standards and profile of the electrical industry. We hope Danny’s success will inspire other young people to pursue a career in the electrotechnical sector.”
Danny’s employer, Grants (Dufftown) LTD commented: “We are extremely proud of Danny for winning SkillELECTRIC 2023. Danny is a hard-working, talented, and dedicated apprentice who strives to deliver high-quality work. Danny has been an asset to our company, and we are delighted to see Danny recognised for his achievements. We look forward to supporting Danny with his development.”
Ben Gillin, who is employed by Lloyd Morris Electrical, a company certified by NICEIC, secured the second position in SkillELECTRIC 2023. The third spot went to Conor McDonnell, who works for another NICEIC-certified company, Nesbitt Electrical.
Danny, Ben and Conor all received an iPad courtesy of NICEIC, and all the finalists were awarded free access to two NICEIC training courses, which cover the fundamentals of electrical energy storage systems and electric vehicles. These continuing professional development (CPD) accredited courses, and together the experience competitors gained on solar PV during the competition, will help this next generation of electricians develop the skills they need to deliver the UK's renewable energy infrastructure. It’s also the first step on their journey to achieving 'Electrician Plus' status, post qualification.
After a rigorous competition, SkillELECTRIC competitors may also have the opportunity to join the WorldSkills UK training programme, where they will receive expert coaching and mentoring. The WorldSkills UK team will then select the most talented and skilled candidates to compete in the next national WorldSkills competition, which will take place between 10 - 15 September 2024.
