On 8 May 2024, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the British Standards Institution (BSI) published a Draft for Public Comment (DPC) seeking feedback on a proposed amendment to the Requirements for Electrical Installations, specifically BS 7671:2018+A2:2022.

The need for change

NICEIC Head of Technical Advice and Practice, Sam Donaghy, commented: “We strongly encourage electrical professionals to respond to this DPC. Electricians uphold electrical safety regulations and standards day in and day out, so they’re best positioned to recognise when changes are needed. They are the frontline guardians of electrical safety.”

“By adhering to industry standards, electricians witness firsthand how these guidelines impact safety and efficiency. The need for additional clarity regarding unidirectional and bidirectional protective devices became evident through enquiries received via our technical helpline. This feedback highlighted necessary change and informed the recommendations put forward in the DPC,” he added.

Sam stated: “This DPC directly addresses the requirement for bidirectional devices to be used where there is the possibility for power to flow in both directions. Consequently, we have supported the proposals for change and continue to support this proposed amendment. Additionally, the amendment aligns with a bulletin from the British Electrotechnical and Allied Manufacturers’ Association (BEAMA).”
