In a survey, 25% of NICEIC businesses said upskilling in energy-efficient technologies is their top priority for the next 12 months.
NICEIC is one of the UK’s leading providers of electrotechnical training courses and qualifications, with 1,313 training courses delivered to almost 7,400 delegates in 2024 alone.
Given the ever-changing nature of the industry and the urgent need for contractors to upskill in emerging and green technologies, we’re working hard to continually update our training offering, ensuring our courses are representative of our certified businesses’ evolving needs.
That is why NICEIC recently conducted a survey with a sample of over 500 certified businesses to find out exactly what they are looking for when it comes to ongoing training and qualifications.
What our certified businesses want
The survey participants were asked to identify, in their own words, their business’s single most significant training need for technical skills over the next 12 months. Their responses make for very interesting reading.
One in four businesses surveyed (25%) identified green energy and emerging technologies as their top training priority over the next year, while 14% said that no training was required. A further 8% said that keeping up with regulatory requirements, such as those encompassed within BS 7671, was their most significant training requirement.
This demonstrates an increasing awareness amongst our certified businesses of the need to upskill in key growth areas such as solar PV, EV charging and energy-efficient storage systems (EESS) – all of which will be at the heart of the UK’s drive to net zero.
Green skills for the future
Alex Robinson, Head of Product Development at NICEIC, said:
“It is encouraging to see that so many of our certified businesses are identifying emerging and green technologies as their top priority when it comes to learning and development in the year ahead. With the deadline for the UK’s ambitious net zero targets fast approaching, the electrotechnical industry will be at the forefront of the push to increase energy efficiency and lower the carbon footprint of our homes, workplaces and industrial settings.
“In line with this growing training need, NICEIC has introduced a wide range of courses and qualifications designed to get electrical contractors educated and confident in tackling all kinds of energy-efficient installations. These courses will not only enable businesses to play a vital role in the fight against climate change; they will also allow them to tap into a growing base of consumers keen to install energy-efficient appliances in their homes.”
What NICEIC has to offer
Here are just a few of NICEIC’s courses designed to help your business get up to speed with renewables:
The top three qualifications listed above have been awarded the prestigious Electrician Plus kitemark. Electrician Plus is a scheme designed to highlight the important role of qualified electricians in the installation of low carbon and renewable technologies. Adequate understanding of electrical scientific theory and principles and demonstrable occupational competence are critical to the safe installation of such technologies; the Electrician Plus model highlights how, once someone reaches qualified electrician status, all that is needed is top-up CPD and qualifications in specific new technologies to enable safe, compliant and competent installations.
