When Jane Thorp first set her sights on becoming an electrician, she knew it wouldn’t be easy. But with determination, talent, and the support of her employer, Fellowes Electrical, she’s gone from strength to strength, culminating in a standout performance at the 2025 SkillELECTRIC regional heats.

A spark ignited

Jane’s journey began at Suffolk College in Ipswich, where her tutor, Lawrence Metcalf, recognised her potential early on. He encouraged her to enter the SPARKS Magazine Female Skills Competition. Jane not only entered, but won, becoming the first ever winner of the competition.

This victory opened the door to further opportunities. Jane progressed to the SPARKS’ Apprentice of the Year competition, where she won her regional heat and placed second nationally, an impressive feat considering that many of her competitors were nearing qualification, while Jane still had over 18 months left of her apprenticeship.

SkillELECTRIC success

Building on her momentum, Jane entered the 2025 SkillELECTRIC competition, which showcases the UK’s top electrical apprentices. At the regional heat held at King’s Lynn College, Jane was one of the only competitors to complete the entire build within the allotted time, testing and finishing her work to a high standard.
Despite the nerve-wracking nature of the competition, where scores across all regional heats are compared nationally, Jane’s performance stood out. Her precision, speed, and professionalism, a testament to her growing expertise.

"Leading up to the final, it is a mix of nerves and excitement” Jane reflects. “I want to be as prepared as possible to give the best on the day. There is a lot to think about from the build itself to the time constraints, and I’ve been going into college to get some extra practice in with my tutor. I’ve found the SkillELECTRIC journey has already helped at work, I think I’ve proved myself in a way, that I’m committed and wanting to learn and take on new challenges. Fellowes have definitely noticed that and have been really supportive throughout.”

Support from Fellowes Electrical

Jane’s success hasn’t happened in isolation. Her employer, Fellowes Electrical, has been instrumental to her development. Director Ben Corke recalls how Jane approached several companies before joining Fellowes, demonstrating her passion and commitment from the outset.

“Jane chose this career. She didn’t fall into it, she pursued it,” says Ben. “That makes a huge difference. She’s genuinely interested in the work, and that shows in everything she does.”

Fellowes Electrical has gradually increased Jane’s responsibilities, allowing her to take on more complex tasks while ensuring quality and safety remain paramount. “We’re now at the stage where she’s picking up more and more on her own,” Ben adds. “She’s earned that trust.”

A bright future ahead

Jane’s journey has only just begun. With continued support from her college and employer, she’s well on her way to becoming a fully qualified electrician and a role model for other people entering the trade.

As Ben puts it, “You spend four years training for your AM2, but it’s after that you really start learning how electrics work in the real world. Jane’s already ahead of the curve.”

"I’ve found the SkillELECTRIC journey has already helped at work."
