When apprentice electrician Fabian Maciejewski of East Goscote Electrics (EGE) first stepped into the trade, he was determined to excel and build a long-term career. That drive has taken him from the workshop to the national stage, earning a place in the finals of SkillELECTRIC, the UK’s premier competition for electrotechnical apprentices.

A drive to excel

Fabian’s passion for quality work has been clear from the start. “I want to be proud of everything I install,” he says. “Whether it’s a first fix or a full system, the quality has to be top tier.” His commitment to precision and professionalism quickly set him apart, and when the opportunity to enter SkillELECTRIC arose, Fabian didn’t hesitate.

The SkillELECTRIC challenge

The competition tested Fabian’s technical ability and mental resilience “SkillELECTRIC really pushed me,” he says. “You have to problem-solve quickly, stay calm, and maintain high standards. It’s helped me massively on real jobs.” Working under strict time constraints and intense scrutiny, Fabian demonstrated skill and composure, traits that will serve him well throughout his career at EGE.

East Goscote Electrics Contracts Manager, Fred Brant says “Clients know we’re serious about standards. That’s at the core of what we do. We’ve been an NICEIC approved contractor for 49 years now which gives our customers confidence of our knowledge and expertise, and internally it keeps us pushing for continual improvement.”

“When it comes to training and apprenticeships, we have exactly the same approach, we look for people who are keen to learn and take pride in their work.”

Beyond the competition

Fabian’s experience at SkillELECTRIC has already translated into his day-to-day work. From complex installations to renewable energy projects, he approaches every task as an opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities. One standout moment was supporting a major solar PV installation. “There was so much involved, and when you step back at the end and everything looks neat and works perfectly, it puts a smile on your face,” he says.

Looking ahead

Both Fred and Fabian recognised the rapid changes shaping the electrical sector, from the rise of renewable energy to increasing expectations around safety, compliance, and professionalism.

As the electrical industry evolves with new technologies and sustainability demands, Fabian is ready to embrace the challenge. “Being trained at an NICEIC-certified company does give me confidence that I’m learning the right way and that sets you up for the future.”

As EGE approaches 50 years of NICEIC certification, its focus remains the same as the day it began, according to Fred “delivering safe, high-quality electrical work backed by professionalism”.

Fabian’s journey is a fantastic example of what SkillELECTRIC can do for those that enter. As well as recognising and celebrating talent, it helps to shape careers by instilling important fundamentals and reinforcing the value of a commitment to standards.
