WG Wigginton has been part of the electrical industry for nearly a century and, for 68 of those years, it has proudly held NICEIC certification.
Founded in 1926 by the Wigginton family, the company began by delivering essential electrical services to communities across the London and the South East.
Today, it’s a thriving, multi-service contractor offering electrical, mechanical, fire safety, and retrofit compliance solutions.Headquartered in West London, Greenford, WG Wigginton has grown with the sector, adapting to shifting regulations, rising compliance standards, and the evolving needs of public sector clients.
“Next year is our hundred-year anniversary,” says Projects Director Alex Mitchell. “In that time, we’ve worked with everyone from councils and housing associations to private developers. We’ve had to keep evolving, and NICEIC has been part of that journey.”
Keeping compliance at the core
Now led by a senior team including Alex and Contracts Manager Scott Draper, WG Wigginton remains laser-focused on compliance – not just as a deliverable, but as a mindset. The company tests up to 1,200 properties a month as part of various frameworks and retrofit schemes, and routinely uncovers unsafe or DIY work that needs correcting.
“We see everything – downlighters installed without fire rating, taped-up connectors, sockets wired with the wrong size cable... unfortunately, non-compliant or poorly executed electrical work is still far too common,” says Scott.
“Our role is to identify those issues and put them right. We always make sure properties are left fully compliant with current regulations before we leave – not just for the sake of ticking a box, but to ensure the safety and peace of mind of the people living there.”
Their ability to consistently deliver safe, regulation-compliant installations has helped WG Wigginton build long-term relationships with local authorities and housing providers – and NICEIC certification underpins that trust.
“Compliance is the keyword,” adds Alex. “Clients know they can rely on us, and NICEIC helps give them that assurance.”
Memorable projects
Among the company’s standout work is a full electrical refurbishment of two care homes for Barnet Homes, which was completed while residents remained on site – including those receiving end-of-life care.“That job really tested our ability to work sensitively, professionally, and safely,” Alex recalls. “The stakes were high, and we delivered.”
WG Wigginton has also completed a five-year framework for Greenwich Council, including testing and rewiring across several tower blocks – demonstrating its capacity for large-scale, high-risk environments.
The role of NICEIC
WG Wigginton first became NICEIC-certified in 1957 – a milestone they’re proud of and still benefit from every day.“It’s the most recognised certification in the industry,” says Scott. “Clients look for it in tenders and frameworks. It’s almost a given – if you don’t have it, you’re not even in the conversation.”
Beyond recognition, the team values the support NICEIC provides. From regular assessments to the technical helpline and CPD webinars, the resources available help ensure WG Wigginton remains current and confident in its delivery.
“We love the NICEIC Pocket Guides app for checking technical details on-site,” says Scott. “And their CPD offerings help us stay sharp and compliant with evolving regulations.”
Investing in the future
As well as scaling their retrofit and fire safety services, WG Wigginton is committed to bringing new talent into the industry. The company currently supports three apprentices in the final stages of their training – many of whom are recruited locally.“We believe in developing people from the ground up,” says Alex. “And having NICEIC certification gives apprentices confidence that they’re being trained to the right standard.”
Looking ahead
As the electrical industry continues to evolve, WG Wigginton is staying focused on what they do best – delivering safe, compliant, professional work backed by trust and experience."The future’s hard to predict,” says Alex. “But wherever the industry goes, we’ll go with it, backed by NICEIC and everything they bring to the table."
