City & Guilds Solar Photovoltaic (PV)

Understanding the design, installation and commissioning of a Domestic Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems.

What will you learn?

This award is intended for qualified electricians who aim to install grid-connected PV systems to domestic dwellings (either as an integrated solution or as a retro fit.

It is concerned with domestic systems installation within prescribed specifications and therefore does not cover design or glazed or curtain wall systems. This 4 day course includes all the Health & Safety requirements to allow direct access to the Microgeneration Certification Scheme.

Who should attend?

Individuals who wish to install and self-certify solar PV installations, and access NICEIC’s MCS Installer Scheme (or other government scheme operators).

Day 1

  • P.V. Basics
  • P.V. theory:

           o   components, preparation, safety, roofing terms

  • Tour and demonstration of the installed systems
  • Practice questions

Day 2

  • Safety

  • Roofing /Tile cutting
  • Connections/Terminations/Assembly

            o   Representative from Multi Contact

  • System installation
  • Calculations
  • Practice questions

Day 3

  • Calculations
  • Fault finding
  • Inspection and Testing

Day 4

  • Practice questions
  • Revision
  • Exam (written)
  • Training evaluation

Pre-Requisites

Candidates are required to have the skills and qualifications to meet the entry requirements for a Qualified Supervisor on the NICEIC Approved Contractor Scheme or a Competent Persons Scheme such as the NICEIC Domestic Installer Scheme.

 Acceptable qualifications include:

  • City & Guilds 2382-10 Certificate in Requirements for Electrical Installation (BS7671:2008)
  • City & Guilds 2382-20 Certificate in Requirements for Electrical Installation Update (BS7671:2008)

Next Step

Candidates might also be interested in other renewable technologies such as Air and Ground Source Heat Pumps, Solar Thermal, Bio Fuels, Wind Power and Hydro Power. This course will allow the candidate to apply to NICEIC’s Microgeneration Certification Scheme.
