| What is ACS Scheme for Gas? |
The Nationally Accredited Certification Scheme for Individual Gas Fitting Operatives (ACS) is one of the industry recognised and accepted routes for an experienced operative to gain a certificate of competence. |
| Why do I need an ACS certificate of competence? | It is a requirement of the Gas Safety Regulations (1998) for individuals to be competent in the areas of gas work they carry out and be registered with the body recognised (Gas Safe Register) by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Holders of an ACS Certificate are able to register with Gas Safe. Certification is available for a wide range of gas work in the following sectors: |
| ACS Assessments Required | In all areas of gas work there is a core gas safety element which must be achieved before an individual appliance assessment can be undertaken. There are core gas safety elements for Domestic Natural Gas, Liquefied Petroleum Gas, Non Domestic Gas, Non Domestic Catering, Non Domestic Laundry, Emergency Service and Meter Installation. Example: Domestic Natural Gas: Core Domestic Gas Safety - CCN1 (mandatory), also includes Combustion Performance Analysis – CPA1 Once this has been completed, the appliance assessment relevant to your work can be completed:

| Initial Assessments | First-time entrants under the scheme are required to take an initial assessment which is modular and can be tailored and grouped together to suit the nature of the work carried out. |
| Re-Assessments | Re-Assessment (renewal) Renewal of competence is required every 5 years which can be a shorter process than the initial assessment. It is designed to cover key competencies and any changes introduced. MOT style Certification is available for ACS assessments see below for details. Oil
| What is the ACS scheme for oil | The nationally accredited certification scheme for individual oil technicians is the only route for individuals to complete a certificate of competence to enable them to apply to register with the Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC). |
| Why do I need an OFTEC certificate of competence? | NICEIC Certification’s Oil Competency Scheme delivers a certificate which is a requirement for oil technicians who wish to demonstrate their competence and to register with OFTEC or other operators of Competent Person Schemes. Certification is available for a range of oil work including:

| MOT style certification (Gas & Oil) | |
| What is an MOT style certificate? | An MOT style certificate allows you to take renewal of assessments/certificates up to six months prior to the expiry of existing certificate(s), without the loss of any time. The expiry date of the new certificate will be five years plus the remaining time period on the expiring certificate. Important: If the period is greater than six months the certificate issued will have an expiry date of five years only from the date of completion of the assessment. Example: CCN1, CENWAT, CKR1 assessments/certificate expires 01/12/2017 renewal of these assessment must be completed before or on the 01/06/2017. |
| When can I have an MOT style certificate? |
On renewal of assessments/certificates. |
| How do I take advantage of the MOT style certificate initiative? | An MOT style certificate must be requested via your chosen NICEIC Approved Assessment Centre and a copy of the expiring certificate taken with your application in order for the extension to be applied to your new Certificate of Competence. Important: Failure to do so will result in a standard five year expiration date being applied. |
